Policies and Procedures

All students are expected to be knowledgeable of and adhere to all University academic policies and procedures. Students also are expected to both maintain Academic Integrity and follow the Student Code of Conduct.

The Undergraduate Bulletin is Penn State’s resource for academic information and requirements. Students can view program requirements and suggested academic plans.

The University Registrar has many procedures that are specific to academic rules of the university, including dropping courses, withdrawal and leave of absence.

Academic Calendars list key dates and deadlines for current and future Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.

The following are a listing of a few policies and procedures related to advising and undergraduate students:

  • Academic Integrity- Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity in an open, honest and responsible manner. Academic integrity is a basic guiding principle for all academic activity at The Pennsylvania State University, and all members of the University community are expected to act in accordance with this principle.
  • Change of Campus- Additional information and tutorials for using Update Campus in LionPATH can be found on the Student Help page.
  • Change of Major/ Entrance to Major- Students typically enter a specific major within the college sometime between third and fifth semesters.
  • Faculty Senate Petitions- When a student has not followed a University Faculty Senate policy or procedure and believes an exception to the policy may be warranted, he/she may submit a petition to the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Education Subcommittee on Academic Standards. A petition may be used to request an exception to any policy and/or to request a retroactive procedure. The committee does not grant petitions automatically. Strong, documented justification must be provided to establish the circumstances that warrant a retroactive action. Additional information can be found on the University Faculty Senate site.
  • Registration information- Adding courses, dropping courses, registration timetables, etc.
  • Third Course Attempt-Students are limited to a maximum of two (2) attempts to complete a course. However, if there are extenuating circumstances a student may request one additional attempt. For additional information please review Academic Administrative Policies and Procedure Manual- Policy C-7
  • Re-enrollment- Allows former degree candidates to resume a degree program.
  • Academic Progress- When a student does not make adequate progress towards meeting and maintaining this 2.00 grade-point average, various academic progress statuses are used to serve as notification and to assist the student in correcting academic difficulties. Information on meeting with your adviser to release your Hold can be found here
