Newell appointed head of the Department of Kinesiology in the College of Health and Human Development
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (October 9, 2007) – Dr. Karl M. Newell, professor of kinesiology and the Marie Underhill Noll Chair in Human Performance in the Penn State College of Health and Human Development, has been appointed head of the Department of Kinesiology effective September 28, 2007.
Newell has served as interim head of the department since July 1. He previously served as head of the department from 1993 to 2001 before being appointed associate dean for research and graduate education in the College of Health and Human Development, a position he held for six years.
“Dr. Newell brings an outstanding record of academic accomplishments and administrative experience to this role,” said Nan Crouter, Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz Dean of the College of Health and Human Development. “I am delighted that Dr. Newell will provide wise leadership and guidance to the department and to the college in this capacity.”
Dr. Newell is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motor behavior. Among his many academic honors is the Distinguished Scholar Award of the North American Society for Psychology and Sport Activity, the University Scholar Award of the University of Illinois, and the Faculty Scholar Medal of Penn State. He has edited or co-edited 7 books and has authored or co-authored more than 80 book chapters and 200 articles in refereed journals. Dr. Newell’s research has been supported by major funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and a variety of other government and industry sources.
