HDFS students are often engaged in volunteering, extracurricular activities, and paid work in addition to their academic courses. Building an integrated academic and career plan will help you choose courses and non-academic activities strategically, so you develop a coherent set of skills and knowledge that will prepare you well for a career. The academic adviser is here to help you explore these opportunities and align them with your goals.

  • Identifying your goals: Take time to determine your goals related to your education and career. The General Career Guidance information can be helpful in navigating this step.
  • Choosing your courses: Select courses that will help you explore your interests.
  • Internship and research opportunities: Select hands-on experiences, including volunteer opportunities, internships, research experiences, or paid work, to further define your interests and build your skills.

To help you organize your plan, we have developed a simple worksheet you can fill out and bring to your advising appointment each semester. This will help you think about what you are trying to accomplish and help the academic adviser guide you to the right options.
