Eligibility

Eligble undergraduate students can apply for the following HDFS scholarships and awards. Those eligible for multiple awards can apply for all of them at once using this form.  Please mark the checkboxes for all of the scholarships for which you are eligible and would like to apply.

Please note the additional application materials for each award and be prepared to submit essays, resumes, or contact information for references, where applicable, with this form.

Deadline

The deadline for all submissions for these awards, including this form and any application materials sent directly to the HDFS Advising Office, is May 1, 2020.  Only completed applications will be reviewed.  If you have questions about these awards or submitting additional application materials, contact the HDFS Advising Office.

Corneal Award for Outstanding Student Achievement in HDFS

This award, created in recognition of the long-term contributions of Sherry Corneal to the personal and professional development of undergraduate students in HDFS, is intended to recognize an outstanding senior HDFS student who has combined strong classroom achievement, career-related extracurricular activities, and personal and professional growth during their HDFS studies.
 
Eligibility
This award will be given to a graduating senior majoring in HDFS who has completed at least 90 credits and plans to graduate within 12 months of the application deadline (graduating May 2020, August 2020, or December 2020).

Criteria
This award will be given to a student who:
  • has demonstrated a high level of engagement in HDFS coursework, with high or improving achievement over the course of their studies;
  • has engaged in extracurricular activities related to their HDFS studies and professional goals (e.g. volunteer, internship, or paid work experiences);
  • and has demonstrated significant personal and professional growth in overcoming challenges during their HDFS studies.
Application Requirements
Applicants should submit the following information via this form (or by email to Sarah Krupp, HDFS academic adviser, where relevant).
  • Statement by the applicant (not to exceed two pages, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, an one-inch margins), describing how they have demonstrated the qualities listed in the award criteria.
  • Contact information for two references (letters are no longer required).  At least one reference must come from a College of Health and Human Development faculty member or instructor.  The other reference may come from a faculty member, staff member or academic adviser, or volunteer or internship supervisor (not necessarily affiliated with Penn State).  References can be submitted with this form or provided directly to Sarah Krupp, HDFS academic adviser, in an email.
  • The applicant's current resume.
Award
The award is sponsored by the HDFS Affiliage Program Group (APG) of the College of Health and Human Development Alumni Society.  The recipient of this award will be selected by the Awards Committee of the HDFS APG.  The recipient will be presented a financial award and engraved plaque at the time of their graduation.

Quell Foundation Bridge the Gap Undergraduate Scholarship

This scholarship is intended for students who plan to pursue a career in or related to mental health services.
 
Candidates must be returning to Penn State as a full-time student for at least one semester (fall and/or spring) for the 2020-21 academic year and must have a FASFA on file.

Application Requirements
  • Essay (no more than two pages, double-spaced), documenting the candidate's personal and professional goals and outlining the reasons they have an interest in working in the mental health field.
  • Contact information for at least one reference from a faculty member or professional adviser, which can be submitted with this form or provided directly to Sarah Krupp, HDFS academic adviser, in an email.

Suzann Andrews Tedesco Award

This award recognizes outstanding achievement by undergraduate students whose interests and actions promote service to individuals, families, and communities.
 
Students who are enrolled in Human Development and Family Studies are eligible to apply.  Selection is based on evidence of success in areas that include academics, but also social maturity and commitment to bettering the lives of young children.  Candidates must be returning to Penn State as a full-time student for at least one semester (fall and/or spring) during the 2020-21 academic year and must have a FAFSA on file.

Application Requirements
  • Essay (no more than two pages, double-spaced), documenting the candidate's personal and professional goals and outlining the reasons they have an interest in working with young children
  • Contact information for at least two references from faculty members or professional supervisors, which can be submitted with this form or provided directly to Sarah Krupp, HDFS academic adviser, in an email.

Anthony R. D'Augelli Undergraduate Scholarship in LGBTQ Research and Service

This scholarship recognizes outstanding achievement by undergraduate students whose interests and actions promote research and/or service related to LGBTQ individuals, families and communities.
 
Students who are enrolled in Human Development and Family Studies as a major or minor, and are actively engaged in faculty-approved research about LGBTQ topics or are interning at an agency or non-profit organization serving the LGBTQ community are eligible to apply. Selection is based on evidence of working in an LGBTQ research lab and/or human service area.

Application Requirements
  • Essay (no more than two pages, double-spaced), documenting the candidate's experienced with LGBTQ research and/or service and outlining the reasons that they have an interest in working in LGBTQ research or service fields
  • Contact information for at least one reference from a faculty member or supervisor of research, internship, or service, which can be submitted with this form or provided directly to Sarah Krupp, HDFS academic adviser, in an email.
