The Biological and Life Sciences Interest Group was established by the Dean’s Office in fall of 2014. The primary purpose of the Biological and Life Sciences Interest group is to create opportunities for Health and Human Development faculty members in the biological and life sciences to get to know one another and to learn more about one another’s research in a manner to encourage collaborations and offers of mutual assistance. A second purpose is to identify possible synergies—perhaps “cores” that could provide expertise and, possibly, unique services to other faculty, and in so doing enhance efficiencies, productivity, and our collective competitive edge with regard to attaining external research funds. This would help us make maximum use of our resources. A third purpose is to create a mechanism—such as an advisory board—to facilitate communication between the faculty in this domain and the dean and associate dean for research and graduate education.

If you have any interest in joining this group, please send an email to Dr. Mary Jane De Souza (, who is the faculty leader of the group. If you have questions, feel free to contact Mary Jane, or Dr. Kathy Drager, Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Education ( Faculty researchers at any career stage are welcome, including those who may feel that only some of their research qualifies as “biological or life sciences.” This is a big tent, and we want to find out who wants to get in under the tent!
