Aurora, Penn State’s Outdoor Orientation Programs, offers a powerful start to a student’s Penn State experience. These five unique programs — ORION, POLARIS, RIGEL, URSA, and VEGA — offer first-year students a distinctive entrance into Penn State life — forging friendships and unforgettable adventures to carry with them always.

First-year seminars

First-year seminars are one of the required courses for all Penn State students. JumpStart, LEAP, or Aurora can count as your seminar, but HHD also offers first year seminars taught by faculty in each of our academic programs.

Health and Human Development House

Health and Human Development House is one of the Special Living Options (SLO) available through Penn State Housing Services. HHD House is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a health-related major, as well as students who are committed to healthy living. Other SLO programs may also be right for you.

Summer Entrance

For those students entering Penn State and HHD during the summer, we offer a number of LEAP or Learning Edge Academic Programs. LEAP provides entering freshmen the chance to begin their journey at Penn State University Park by way of a learning community. LEAP students take two courses together in groups of 24 that are reserved exclusively for first-year students, live together in the same dormitory area, and have an upper class student mentor to guide them through their first semester. HHD offers LEAP Prides in Biobehavioral Health, Health Policy and Administration (Personal Health Management), Kinesiology (Fitness for Student Lifestyles), Human Development and Family Studies, and Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management (Leisure and Human Behavior).
