Advising

Welcome to HDFS Advising

We are Devon Thomas and Teresa McGowan -- the full-time academic advisers for HDFS and for the Gerontology minor. We are here to help you get the most out of your studies. To schedule an appointment with one of us, please use the Starfish appointment scheduling system at: http://sites.psu.edu/starfishinfo/ .

  • If you are on Devon’s or Teresa’s advising roster you will find us in your network in Starfish. Otherwise please search under the “services” tab then find the University Park – College of Health and Human Development link from a list of university-wide college links. Devon Thomas is listed on page two (2) and Teresa McGowan is listed on page (1).

At the time of your appointment please sign in using your PSU ID at the kiosk located in the HDFS main office 119 HHD Building (you will find the main office just inside the entrance that faces the Old Main lawn closest to College Ave.). Have a seat and we will come down to meet you for your scheduled appointment.

Considering Majoring or Minoring in HDFS?

Please schedule an appointment with *Teresa McGowan via Starfish at: http://sites.psu.edu/starfishinfo/. She will most likely not be in your network and you will need to find her under the “services” tab, then find the University Park – College of Health and Human Development link from a list of university-wide college links.

Teresa will review your academic record, listen to you describe your future goals and help you think about how HDFS might fit into your plans. The earlier you have a conversation with Teresa, the more she can help you plan wisely as you complete your General Education requirements and begin your HDFS studies. Teresa is also available to assist with the Change of Major process for students who wish to transfer into the HDFS major.

*For the fall 2017 semester please pay close attention to Teresa’s office location. She will be working out of 119 HHD Bldg and 5 Henderson Building for scheduled appointments; 119 HHD Bldg for walk-in advising.

Walk-in Advising

Walk-in advising is available each week, but subject to change based on advisor availability. Please check Teresa McGowan’s Starfish calendar for available walk-in advising times and location before making the trip to 119 HHD. For walk-in advising please sign in using your PSU ID at the kiosk located in the HDFS main office 119 HHD Building

The walk-in advising sessions are structured to be 15 minutes in duration to discuss brief questions or concerns. If your questions or concerns require longer than 15 minutes to discuss, you will be asked to schedule an advising appointment. Students exploring the HDFS or Gerontology minors might want to take advantage of the walk-in advising.

We are here to help you decide whether to pursue a degree in HDFS or a minor in HDFS or Gerontology. We will help you to plan wisely so that your degree or minor help you reach your future goals.
