Together We Teach

Intergenerational learning in a university classroom.

Together We Teach

Connecting Experience and Education Through Intergenerational Learning

Together We Teach is an intergenerational learning initiative that connects university instructors and older adults to enhance teaching and student learning. By integrating lived experience into courses from the beginning of instruction, the program creates meaningful learning experiences for students while valuing the knowledge and perspectives of older adults.

What Is Intergenerational Learning?

Intergenerational learning brings people from different generations together to share knowledge, skills, and experiences. In higher education, this approach helps students engage more deeply with course material, challenges age-related stereotypes, and creates opportunities for mutual learning and connection.

Why Together We Teach?

Together We Teach builds on traditional intergenerational learning by involving older adults early in course design and instruction.

Benefits for students:

  • Deeper understanding of course content through real-world perspectives
  • Increased engagement and critical thinking
  • Greater awareness of aging as a lifelong process

Benefits for instructors:

  • Collaborative support in course design and instruction
  • Access to diverse lived experiences that enhance teaching
  • Structured program support from TWT staff

Benefits for older adults:

  • Meaningful opportunities to share expertise and experience
  • Connection with students and faculty
  • Continued learning and engagement with the university community

How It Works

Instructors partner with older adults—called Instructional Partners—to support course content, in-class activities, or assignments. Faculty participate in a guided process that includes brainstorming workshops and ongoing staff support throughout the semester.

Together We Teach is currently a pilot program. Courses will be added as the initiative grows.

For Instructors

Faculty interested in participating can submit an interest form or propose a course idea. Fully developed ideas are not required.

For Older Adults & Community Members

Older adults can participate as Instructional Partners, working alongside faculty rather than enrolling as students. Course opportunities are posted prior to each semester and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
