Comments

Marianne Hillemeier, Ph.D. has research interests rooted in her early experiences in clinical practice as a pediatric nurse practitioner, subsequent MPH training in maternal and child health, and doctoral studies in demography and sociology, where her research focused on mechanisms underlying racial/ethnic disparities in child mortality and preventive health care utilization. Her current research agenda has two major themes. The first pertains to disparities in women’s health, especially as they relate to increased risk of adverse birth outcomes. She co-led an interdisciplinary team in developing the Central Pennsylvania Women’s Health Study (CePAWHS), which included a pre-conceptional health promotion intervention targeting health risks among low-income rural women 18-35 years of age. Her other major research theme relates to children’s mental and physical health, health-related services, and cognitive and educational outcomes. She collaborates with colleagues in sociology and education in studying socioeconomic and racial/ethnic differences in children’s well-being and functioning using nationally-representative data from the Birth and Kindergarten cohorts of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS). She is also a co-investigator in the NICHD-funded Child Community Health Network (CCHN), which examines parental psychosocial stress and allostatic load and its relationship to health and subsequent pregnancy outcomes.
