Professional Experience

The goal of Eric Claus' research is to utilize tools from cognitive neuroscience to better understand the neural circuits that contribute to all stages of substance use disorders, from the initial development to recovery.  He has used numerous techniques in his research including functional MRI, MEG, EEG, and brain stimulation.

Grants and Research Projects

His current research focuses on neural networks that change as an individual reduces their alcohol consumption, both in the absence of treatment and during cognitive behavioral or mindfulness-based treatment.  In addition, he is starting a project that will examine changes in brain function in cigarette smokers who have recently quit smoking.  By identifying the key circuits implicated in behavior change, it may be possible to identify new targets for neuromodulation using techniques such as transcranial electrical stimulation.
