HPA alumna receives healthcare industry impact award

The Department of Health Policy and Administration takes pride in the success of its students.

Morgan Soster received both her bachelor’s degree in health policy and administration and Master of Health Administration from Penn State in 2021 through an integrated undergraduate-graduate five-year program. Following graduation, Soster began her career as a two-year administrative fellow at the Guthrie Clinic. Guthrie’s administrative fellowship is a two-year leadership pipeline program encompassing a series of leadership rotations and spearheading complex strategic projects with high organization impact in the inpatient and outpatient settings, business foundation functions, and quality operations.

In her first year of the program, she worked on a variety of projects including investigating transitions of inpatient dialysis from an external contract to an internal program, analyzing patient safety organization (PSO) data, and creating an annual PSO report for quality improvement, among other projects. In her second year, Soster was selected as the inaugural participant for a leadership immersive experience role working with Guthrie Medical Group. This role provided an opportunity for her to engage as a full practice leader under mentorship from her senior leadership partner.

In 2023, as a result of her successful Fellowship, Soster was promoted to Director of Practice Administration for the Guthrie Clinic locations in Owego and Vestal, New York. In her current role, Soster is responsible for the daily operational oversight of the Guthrie Medical Group offices in Owego and Vestal. She works collaboratively with leadership at all levels, medical providers, and staff to ensure quality care, efficient operation of practice sites, and the achievement of key performance goals. The total scope of operation supports approximately 20 staff members and six providers, managing a profit and loss more than $10 million in net revenue.

In August 2023, Soster was selected as one of the 2023 MGMA Future Five Award recipients. This award, presented annually by the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), recognizes five professionals within the first five years of their career who have demonstrably impacted their organization or the industry. Soster was determined as a recipient in a unanimous vote from the American College of Medical Practice Executives Honors and Awards Committee.

Through their vision of “Advancing the business of healthcare today for a better tomorrow,” MGMA is a key element in perpetuating success throughout the healthcare industry.
