Welcome to HDFS Advising
I am Sarah Krupp -- the full-time academic adviser for HDFS and for the Gerontology minor. I am here to help you get the most out of your studies. To schedule an appointment with me, please use the Starfish appointment scheduling system at: http://sites.psu.edu/starfishinfo/ .
- If you are on my advising roster you will find me in your network in Starfish. Otherwise please search under the “services” tab then find the University Park – College of Health and Human Development link from a list of university-wide college links. If you are not on my assigned roster, you will need to come to Walk In Advising Hours offered weekly. You may also email me to ask your questions and possibly find alternative times to meet.
At the time of your appointment please sign in using your PSU ID at the kiosk located in the HDFS main office 119 HHD Building (you will find the main office just inside the entrance that faces the Old Main lawn closest to College Ave.). Have a seat and Iwill come down to meet you for your scheduled appointment.
Considering Majoring or Minoring in HDFS?
Please come to walk in advising hours for “Sarah Krupp” which can be found via Starfish at: http://sites.psu.edu/starfishinfo/. I will most likely not be in your network and you will need to find me under the “services” tab, then find the University Park – College of Health and Human Development link from a list of university-wide college links.
I will review your academic record, listen to you describe your future goals and help you think about how HDFS might fit into your plans. The earlier you have a conversation with me, the more I can help you plan wisely as you complete your General Education requirements and begin your HDFS studies. I am also available to assist with the Change of Major process for students who wish to transfer into the HDFS major.
Walk-in advising is available each week, but subject to change based on advisor availability. Please check on Starfish under Sarah Krupp for available walk-in advising times and location before making the trip to 119 HHD. For walk-in advising please sign in using your PSU ID at the kiosk located in the HDFS main office 119 HHD Building
The walk-in advising sessions are structured to be 15 minutes in duration to discuss brief questions or concerns. If your questions or concerns require longer than 15 minutes to discuss, you will be asked to schedule an advising appointment. Students exploring the HDFS or Gerontology minors might want to take advantage of the walk-in advising.
I am here to help you decide whether to pursue a degree in HDFS or a minor in HDFS or Gerontology. I will help you to plan wisely so that your degree or minor help you reach your future goals.
Already in the HDFS Major or Minor?
We encourage all HDFS majors to meet with one of us every semester. Regular meetings help us get to know you and provide you with the best possible advice as you pursue your studies. Common items on the agenda at these meetings include:
- choosing a degree option,
- whether to pursue an optional emphasis area or a minor,
- strategies for meeting degree and minor requirements (including supporting courses),
- internship or research opportunities,
- career planning,
- strategies for gaining relevant work experience,
- and graduate school
I am not a financial aid adviser but I can direct you to the best resources at Penn State to help you with financial planning.
The advising website contains a great deal of useful information that can help you plan your HDFS studies. But I know that it can be challenging to think through how all of this information applies to your unique background and future goals. That is why I am here, to help you translate all the information on this website into a plan that helps you reach your goals.
