The Penn State Health Policy and Administration (HPA) Virtual Case Competition, hosted by the Department of Health Policy and Administration and sponsored by Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, will feature the opportunity for students from any University to solve a current healthcare challenge. Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center will use proposed solutions to make a difference in the communities they serve.

This event is  virtual, providing a cost-effective opportunity for students in health administration and related programs from across the country. Avoid travel costs, and apply classroom learning to a real-world case, while honing your problem-solving and presentation skills. 

There are three categories for  the  competition. There is a limit of 25 teams per category with 3-4 students/team. Students from programs in health administration, health policy, public health, or related fields are eligible to participate.

Friday, October 18 - Welcome and Q & A

  • 3:30 p.m.

Monday, October 21 – Case Drop

  • 8:00 a.m.

Tuesday, October 22 – Case Presentation Submission

  • Submit by 11:59 p.m.

Wednesday, October 23 – 1st and 2nd Round Presentations

  • 8:00 – 8:30 a.m.: Welcome
  • 8:30 a.m. – Noon: Round 1 Case Presentations
  • 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.: Round 2 Case Presentation
  • 4:00 – 4:30 p.m.: Judges' Deliberations
  • 4:30 p.m.: Finalists announced

Thursday, October 24 – Finalists' Presentations and Awards

  • 8:00 – 8:30 a.m.: Welcome finalists and Penn State Health judges
  • 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Finalist presentations

Prizes

  • 1st Place Team $2,500
  • 2nd Place Team $1,500
  • 3rd Place Team $1,000

Fees

  • $300 registration fee for each team, with a limit of two teams per school.
  • $150 discounted registration fee for the second team.
  • No additional cost for faculty advisers.

  • Registration will open on May 1, 2024
  • The registrant’s name and contact information on this form will serve as the main contact for the team and will receive any/all communications from Penn State University regarding the competition.
  • Registration deadline is October 1, 2024, by 5:00pm EST

Our program wants to register but we don't have the names of our team members until the start of the school year. Can we still register? icon-olus-circle

You may register by the name of your program and your college/university. A separate link will be sent later for you to provide the names of your team members.

Is there a waiting list for teams that don't make the deadline? icon-olus-circle

Our registration system will track the order of teams that don't meet the deadline. If there are any teams that cancel, we will reach out in order to those on the waiting list.

Can our team have a student observer? icon-olus-circle

One of your four team members can act as an observer, but they are NOT allowed to work on the case. You may not have any less than three active team members.

  • Responses during Q&A
What is the role of the faculty adviser? icon-olus-circle

Your faculty adviser can coach the team on presentation style and help you practice Q&A. They may not provide recommendations for your solution.

Will the judges know which team is from which college or university? icon-olus-circle

During the competition, participating schools will be recognized by a letter and number. Your PowerPoint presentation must not have any reference to a team’s university or college. Team members may not wear any logos or other signifiers of their program.
