Speech and Language services are provided by master's level graduate students, under the supervision of our clinical faculty, all of whom are certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and licensed by the State of Pennsylvania Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. 

Speech-language evaluation and therapy is conducted within the clinic on the Penn State University Park campus unless otherwise indicated.

Pediatric Evaluations

Assessments conducted with pediatric clients, ages birth to 17 years, to evaluate articulation, phonology, language disorders, pragmatic language, and/or childhood apraxia of speech.
Availability: Monday and Wednesday mornings

Fluency Evaluations

Assessments conducted with adolescents and adults with suspected fluency disorders.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Evaluations

Assessments conducted with clients across the lifespan with a wide range of diagnoses and medical complexities that result in limited verbal communication and may benefit from alternative means of communication including low tech and high tech communication supports.

Preschool Screenings

Speech and language screenings provided to enrolled children at local preschools and daycare centers. These services are provided onsite at community preschools and daycare centers throughout the State College area.

Individual Speech and Language Therapy Programs

Child Therapy Program

Interventions provided for infants and children up to 17 years of age who have disorders or delays in the areas or articulation/phonology, childhood apraxia of speech, language, fluency, voice, and/or social aspects of language. AAC interventions are also provided in individual or small group settings.
Frequency: Varies by need. Typically 45-60 minute sessions are scheduled 1-2 days per week.

Group Speech and Language Therapy Programs

Early Childhood Group

Early intervention services for children aged three or younger and their families. Sessions focus on collaborating with caregivers and sharing strategies associated with the development of communication skills in young children.

Early Language Group (ELG)

Therapeutic group of five to seven children (ages 3-5) with a variety of speech/language disorders, including articulation, phonology, and language delay/disorder. Treatment is provided through therapeutic play tasks, literacy activities, and structured table top activities.
Frequency: 2 mornings per week, 2.5 hours per session

Pragmatic Language Groups

Therapeutic group of five to seven middle school aged patients who benefit from treatment in a group setting to target a variety of pragmatic language skills including turn taking, increasing eye contact, social exchanges, and direction following.
Frequency: 1 evening per week, 1.5 hours per session

Voice Screenings and Evaluation

Screening appointments and full voice evaluations available to individuals in the Penn State and State College communities. Through a partnership with the Penn State School of Theatre, the voice screening clinic screens all theatre students enrolled in the Voice for the Actor course.

Adult Neurogenic Evaluations

Assessments conducted with adults with known or identified neurogenic disorders (including stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), etc.) affecting speech, language, and/or cognition.

Nursing Home Screenings

Speech and language screenings to assess the cognitive, linguistic, oral motor, and swallowing skills of nursing home residents with suspected needs. These services are provided onsite at the Centre Crest Nursing Home in Bellefonte, PA.

Voice and Communication Training for Gender Diverse Individuals

Assessment and therapy in the area of voice and communication training for transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary individuals. Treatment approaches are adopted to meet each client’s special needs in their quest to acquire authentic expression of their individual persona and can include modification of pitch, resonance and voice characteristics that are personalized, realistic and natural.

English Language Learners (ELL)/Accent Modification

Assessments conducted with adults from foreign language backgrounds who wish to improve their English pronunciation.

SPEAK OUT!® Therapy Program

The SPEAK OUT!® Therapy Program, developed by Parkinson Voice Project®, helps people with Parkinson's regain and retain their speech and swallowing. The program combines education for the patient and family, individual speech therapy, daily home practice using workbooks, flashcards, and online practice sessions, along with weekly speech groups, and regular re-evaluations. BrainBuilders

Small-group cognitive-communication therapy for geriatric clients with memory impairments. The program seeks to maximize thinking, memory, and communication in a social setting for those demonstrating mild to moderate memory loss. A spousal support and education group meets at the same time as the treatment group. This group meets at Juniper Village at Brookline, State College, PA.
Frequency: Tuesdays mornings

Memory Lane

Therapeutic group for geriatric clients who wish to participate in group memory and cognitive activities. This group meets at Juniper Village at Brookline, State College, PA.
Frequency: 45 minute session, one morning per week

SPEAK OUT!® Therapy Program Group Session

The SPEAK OUT!® Therapy Program, developed by Parkinson Voice Project®, includes a group therapy component. After completing individual treatment sessions, SPEAK OUT!® group treatment is the next phase of the SPEAK OUT!® program. The weekly speech groups provide opportunity for those who have completed the individual sessions to practice speech goals in a group setting. In addition, the group provides opportunity for conversation and socialization. Groups are offered both in-person in the Penn State Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic and online via Zoom. Currently, there are two in-person groups and two Zoom groups per week.
