![Karl Stoedefalke](/sites/default/files/styles/paragraph_image_card_fourth_small/public/kinesiology-kines/kinesiology-kines-karl-stoedefalke.jpg?itok=BZN3InTr)
Karl was a faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology from the early 1970s until he retired in 1995. His numerous professional accomplishments include serving in several administrative positions, including as associate dean of academic affairs, associate dean of resident instruction, and acting dean of the College of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (predecessor to the current College of Health and Human Development).
He was well known for his leadership of the Executive Management Health Enhancement Program, and he co-authored the first edition of the American College of Sports Medicine Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription.
Karl was a prolific scholar, pioneer, and national leader in the area of exercise testing and cardiac rehabilitation. In addition, he was an inspirational teacher and mentor, and friend to many students who kept in regular touch with him.
His partner, Janet Fowler Dargitz, generously established the Karl G. Stoedefalke Faculty Award fund in the Department of Kinesiology to honor Karl’s memory and lasting contributions to our department and our field.
Karl is among the many incredible leaders and scholars that have contributed greatly to the reputation of the department. On news of his passing, the Department of Kinesiology recognizes Dr. Stoedefalke’s legacy as the entire department continues to work to improve human health and performance through teaching, research, and service.
