Bianca Vicente
Bianca Vicente, BS ’13, Exercise Physiology
My Kinesiology degree provided me with extensive knowledge to be successful in both my professional and athletic career.
Bianca’s life at Penn State was a transformative journey, marked by challenges that shaped her path toward a fulfilling career in allied health. Initially uncertain about the specific direction she wanted to take, a pivotal moment occurred during a neuroscience course with Dr. Bob Sainburg. This class opened her eyes to the intricate world of neuromotor control, rehabilitation, and ultimately led her to discover her passion for Occupational Therapy.
Participating in the Kines Club, the exhilarating experience of THON, and various other volunteer opportunities on campus added valuable dimensions to Bianca’s academic journey. These activities not only enriched her understanding of health and wellness but also forged lasting connections with peers who, today, are her colleagues in the field of therapy.
Bianca’s Kinesiology degree from Penn State has proven to be a cornerstone in her personal and professional life. As an Occupational Therapist, she draws on the extensive knowledge gained from the program to provide effective patient education and exercise prescriptions. Simultaneously, as an elite athlete, she utilizes this foundation to craft training programs and meal plans. The program's comprehensive curriculum instilled in her the confidence to deliver high-quality care to her patients, bridging the gap between theory and practice seamlessly.
Reflecting on her time at Penn State, one memory stands out as particularly memorable—the inaugural Exercise as Medicine event on campus. Participating in this event allowed her to promote health and wellness among her peers and ignited a passion for positively influencing people's lives. This experience played a pivotal role in her decision to pursue an ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) certification and ultimately become an Occupational Therapist.
In addition to Bianca’s academic and professional pursuits, she is thrilled to share a unique aspect of her life. In January 2024, she will be attending and competing for a spot on Team USA for USA Karate. Last year, she proudly represented the AAU National Team at the World Union Karate Federation Championships—a testament to the diverse and enriching experiences that have shaped her time at Penn State.
As she navigates through the challenges and triumphs of life post-Penn State, Bianca carries with her the invaluable lessons, connections, and skills cultivated during her time in Happy Valley. Her journey at Penn State has been more than just an academic experience; it has been a holistic preparation for a life dedicated to promoting health, wellness, and making a positive impact on those around her.
