Michael A. Kalil, ’09, Movement Science
A Leader in Medicine, Education, and Community Sports Development
Michael Kalil is a multifaceted healthcare professional and educator, serving as an Internal Medicine Hospitalist Physician and Vice Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Beebe Healthcare Network in Lewes, Delaware. With a dedication to both patient care and medical education, Dr. Kalil has carved a unique path that integrates his extensive expertise in internal medicine with his passion for community health, education, and sports.
Early Education and Foundation in Movement Science
Michael's journey in medicine began with his undergraduate education at Penn State University, where he graduated in 2009 with a major in Kinesiology, focusing on movement science. As a member of the prestigious Schreyer Honors College, he completed a research thesis under Dr. Donna Korzick in the Cardiovascular Function Lab. His work in the Noll Lab and involvement with the Kinesiology Club, coupled with his participation in intramural sports, provided a solid foundation in movement science and physical health. This background has proved invaluable throughout his medical career, especially during his clinical rotations in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, where a strong understanding of kinesiology has been essential.
Pursuit of Medical Excellence and Clinical Education
After completing his undergraduate studies, Michael earned his Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). He quickly distinguished himself, becoming board certified in Internal Medicine. Recognized for his commitment to both clinical practice and medical education, he was appointed in 2020 as Medical Director of Undergraduate Medical Education. In this role, he developed a core clinical curriculum for PCOM students in their 3rd and 4th years, providing a robust clinical rotation experience at Beebe Healthcare. Michael’s leadership was instrumental in sustaining clinical rotations during the COVID-19 pandemic, as he worked to ensure student safety while addressing the critical need for healthcare professionals in underserved, rural areas.
In 2024, Dr. Kalil was appointed lead physician investigator for a groundbreaking Hip Fracture Pathway study, a quality improvement initiative aimed at optimizing inpatient care for hip fracture patients. This pathway employs dynamic healthcare metrics and interdepartmental communication, with the goal of reducing time to surgery, enhancing pre-operative assessments, and minimizing post-operative complications. Michael’s work on this project has contributed significantly to advancing patient outcomes at Beebe Healthcare, reinforcing his reputation as a forward-thinking physician and patient advocate.
Commitment to Community and Sports Medicine
Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Kalil brings his expertise to youth sports as a coach and trainer for Sussex Academy, a charter school in Georgetown, Delaware. As an assistant baseball coach, team physician, and head coach for the middle school program, he oversees the athletic development of young players, emphasizing safe and effective training practices. Michael is dedicated to injury prevention, promoting proper biomechanics, enforcing arm care routines, and instituting strict pitch count limits to prevent overuse injuries. His work with the outfielders and focus on players’ health make him a critical asset to the Sussex Academy baseball program and a respected leader in promoting safe sports practices.
Personal Reflections and Passion for Penn State
A true Penn State enthusiast, Michael fondly recalls memorable moments from his college years, including the exhilarating 2005 Ohio State vs. Penn State “White Out” game. His time at Penn State laid the foundation for his professional life, nurturing a commitment to health, sports, and community involvement that continues to shape his career. Michael’s journey from an undergraduate movement science student to a leader in internal medicine and sports coaching reflects his unwavering dedication to both his patients and his community.
