Rohan Murphy '06 - Exercise Physiology
From Penn State Wrestler to National Youth Motivational Speaker
Rohan Murphy, a 2006 graduate of Penn State with a focus in Exercise Physiology, has built an inspiring career as a youth motivational speaker, sharing his message with students in more than 40 states across the country. His journey, however, began long before the stage—rooted deeply in his experiences as a student-athlete and Kinesiology major at Penn State.
Murphy describes his time at Penn State as nothing short of amazing. As a member of the Penn State wrestling team, he found himself immersed in a tight-knit community that pushed him both academically and athletically. With the Kinesiology Department and the wrestling practice facilities both located in Rec Hall, he jokes that he never had a reason to leave the west side of campus. Everything he needed—his classes, his team, and his support system—was right there, creating a sense of convenience and continuity that helped shape his student experience.
Despite his current career as a successful motivational speaker, Murphy shares that he once struggled significantly with public speaking. In fact, during his time at Penn State, he was placed in CAS 100D—a course specifically designed for students with severe public speaking anxiety. “Now I speak in front of large audiences weekly,” he reflects with a laugh. “It’s funny how things work out.” His Kinesiology education not only prepared him academically, but also indirectly guided him toward developing the confidence and communication skills that would one day define his career.
When asked about his favorite Penn State memory, Murphy doesn’t point to a single event, but rather to the people who shaped his experience. “Just being able to meet all the wonderful people that I met at Penn State was a blessing,” he says. He remains grateful for the professors, academic advisors, and coaches who supported him throughout his journey—individuals whose impact he still carries with him today.
From Rec Hall to auditoriums across America, Rohan Murphy’s story is a testament to perseverance, growth, and the power of a supportive community. His life’s work now inspires thousands, but its foundation was laid at Penn State—one meaningful connection, challenging course, and wrestling practice at a time.
