Hands-on experience at Penn State helped Hunter Crine ’15 turn an interest in coaching into a career. Today, he leads Kettlebell Coach University, mentoring coaches around the world.
Hunter Crine ’15 didn’t leave Penn State with every step of his career mapped out. What he did have was hands-on experience, a growing interest in strength coaching, and the discipline he built in the Kinesiology program.
As an Exercise Physiology student, Hunter gained experience working with the football team and completed strength and conditioning internships with multiple teams. Those opportunities gave him coaching experience before he held a professional coaching title. At a Penn State career fair, he met two people from a New York City gym who invited him to interview. That conversation helped launch his career.
Hunter went on to earn a master’s degree in Sports Science from Hofstra University. Over the past decade, he has coached athletes, young people, and clients from a wide range of backgrounds. Now based in Franklin, Tennessee, he is the founder of Kettlebell Coach University, where he coaches and mentors hundreds of coaches around the world.
Hunter credits Penn State with opening doors, though he is candid about the opportunities he wishes he had explored while he was here. “I don’t look back on Penn State like everything clicked perfectly,” he says. “But I found the opportunities that were meant for me, and I’m still walking through the doors those opened today.”
His favorite Penn State memory is less about one event than the feeling of a football Saturday in State College: getting up early, showing up for a noon kickoff, and taking in everything from afternoon games to White Outs under the lights.
For students nearing graduation, Hunter offers the reassurance he could have used himself: “You don’t need to know what you want to do with your life. I certainly didn’t.” He encourages them to keep learning and pay attention to who they become along the way.
