Goal 3: Expand, Diversify, and Support Our Community 

Objective 3.2: Strategically expand the reach of HHD’s undergraduate programs, with an eye toward engaging a more diverse student community 

Action Item 3.2.1

Engage administrators, faculty, advisors, other staff, and students enrolled and/or interested in HHD educational programs at the Commonwealth Campuses that serve more diverse student populations (e.g., Abington, Altoona, Harrisburg).

  • Hold open forums engaging all above-mentioned constituencies.
  • Form workgroups to surface best practices for successful recruitment and retention and teaching and advising of diverse and under-represented students into HHD undergraduate courses and programs at these Commonwealth Campus (e.g., utilize alumni volunteers to help with recruitment of undergraduates from diverse backgrounds).  
  • Reach out to members of Equity Pedagogy Network at these campuses to participate in forums and workgroups and explore broadening membership of faculty in HHD’s disciplines at all our campuses in the Network.
  • Follow-up with continuing annual meetings as indicated.

Informed by the above, build best practices for successful recruitment and retention and teaching and advising of diverse student populations at all campuses housing HHD programs, including both UP and the Commonwealth Campuses that serve more diverse student populations (e.g., Abington, Altoona, Harrisburg).

  • Connect these best practice formation activities with those launched under the Student Success Action Item of  “integrate principles and practices of antiracism and other themes related to diversity, equity and inclusion into existing undergraduate and graduate programs and courses.”
  • Drawing from advising expertise at UP and across the Commonwealth Campuses, develop and disseminate advising practice guidelines for diverse students that can be shared/implemented across campuses

Key Performance Indicators

Increased numbers of students from under-represented minority groups (1) completing HHD gateway courses; (2) enrolling in HHD majors at those campuses and/or at UP; and (3) graduating from those majors at University Park and the Commonwealth Campuses.  [May not see some of these KPIs move until the next five-year period.]
